iRed talk about Thermography and its practical applications at 'Build Tight, Ventilate Right'

4th December 2009
Roots & Shoots, Lambeth - 9.30 - 17.30

Most of the techniques for achieving a low carbon building are well documented but in practice the standards aimed for are often not achieved through lack of understanding about what makes a highly insulated, airtight, energy efficient building.  This course will explain the straightforward building techniques that can achieve this and what can be done on site to improve build quality.

In the morning Lucy Pedler, director of The Green Register will cover the theory of breathing construction, airtightness, robust detailing and natural ventilation.  A typical breathing wall will be examined layer by layer to explain their functions and the low environmental impact materials currently available.  This is followed by a presentation from Niall Crosson of Pro Clima, experts in the building science of airtight buildings, and the morning concludes with a session presented by Gerry Lennon, director of Sandwood Design and Build who will be using a full size model to illustrate Sandwood’s extensive experience of achieving best practice detailing.

The afternoon will include presentations on passive stack/natural ventilation by Passivent. Ray Faulkner from iRED discusses thermographic imaging techniques and applications. Chiltern Dynamics have an on-site demonstration of an airtightness test.
